in the middle
of the starless night
i wander
out,
alone
i look up to where
they might have been
had i been with you
and ask
in a voice of
wilting silence
where
have you
gone
now?
knowing, as i do,
that the blanket of sky
covers you, too
no matter where
on this earth
you
are,
i shiver
in the warm thought
and return
to the chill of
what was once
our
home

hymn 1

he waltzes and flits
a little hummingbird of motorcycle sound
to start me up
to thinking and dreaming
about the then that is so very fary away from my perfect now
husband bathing children upstairs
his igbo punctuates my longing
and i steal away to write this quiet poem
of simmering smiles
and yesterday wiles
and the this and that of then
and we reach across the distance
with coded silences
and poetry intercepted by strangers
and blue screens
and life goes on
twirling and whirling
as we once did
on a dance floor with magic windows
all those long years ago
