Theme for English 9

Stacy Arndt

Inspired by Langston Hughes's poem "Theme for English B"

The instructor said,
Go home and write
a page tonight.
And let that page come out of you-
Then it will be true.
I really don't know if I can.
I am a freshman, with years of school ahead of me.
Not knowing if I can stand anymore,
but what else can I do-what can I say?
I am surely not the only girl in my class,
each enduring same trials, tests and problems.
Riding in my friend's mom's car past still life,
houses blurring together as we gain speed.
Beyond my old school where memories took place.
Slowing down as our destination nears.

Got out and hurled last night's headache over my shoulder.
A sharp pain shot through my back as I realized
the amount of weight that I was to carry.
Trudge up the stairs and push open the double doors.
My eyes growing heavier
as I descend down the winding hallway stairs.
I remember that there is no homeroom today,
and that we start yearbook in journalism.
Also, we do a lab in science.
I guess my day in school is pretty well planned.
I follow my schedule and get to classes on time.
Will I do good today, get one hundreds?
Hopefully A's?
How hard do I have to work?
What is next?
In the end, will it all eventually pay off?

I'm sure.
Someday I will be glad I took it seriously.
I might get a good job and fall deeply in love.
It all lies ahead.
I can't tell at all.
Can I determine it?
As I grow, I will learn more,
and be much smarter.
