Old ghost movies used to be scary. These films would keep people awake at night with their lights on. In recent years, ghost movies have been laughable. Most are quite tacky with bad acting and dialogue. The majority of these are American films. There is an eerie film from Spain that has had people raving.

The Orphanage is about a woman who lives in a house that was her orphanage as a child. She lives in this house with her husband and child. Her son has made an invisible friend in the orphanage. The story alone is creepy. It is well-written. The script captures characters and dialogue well.

Belén Rueda makes a large impact in this film. Rueda is relatable. She compares well with any woman actor. In fact, I would like to see her in more films. Belén helped make this movie what it is.

Dark and dreary are words that work best for this film. There is very little color shown throughout. This works perfectly for this particular movie. The set design and costume design set it up. Tomás is the creepiest kid I have seen in a movie in a while. The mask and make up used are eerie. The visuals are done wonderfully.

Generally,The Orphanage is great. The subtitles don't ever slow down the film. The pacing may be a little off. There are moments of the film that are too long or become dull. Otherwise, the ending is perfect and shocking. Overall, it's an exciting film. The Orphanage is recommended to all viewers.

Year after year, remakes have been being released of original horror films. Well over half of these don't come close to being as good as the original. It's very rare to find a film that beats its original. This is one film to be extremely close to beating its original.

A girl and her parents go to their remote lake house. A man escaped from the cops by his family getting him out. The girl is with her friend looking for weed. They end up finding it with the family of deranged people, the very ones who got the man out. These four people have harmed the girl, but need a place to stay in the rain. They come across a house, which happens to be the girl's house. The parents find out and now they must get their revenge. I find the story to be interesting. The concept is fun to watch play out.

Every actor manages to play his or her role correctly. They make the film realistic. Their characters interact well and makes the situations seem real. This is an important thing for a horror film that many end up failing.

The Last House on the Left is a gruesome film. It's disturbing, grotesque, and repulsive. The photography is gritty and gives the film a greater atmosphere. Make up is good and used appropriately. The visuals are strong.

This movie is more than just gore. It has story, character development, and keeps the audience entertained. It gets very disturbing. There is an uncomfortable rape scene shown in detail. This was shot to shock the audience, and achieves that. There are brutal death scenes closer to the end of the film. This movie is a pleasant surprise. A fan of the original The Last House on the Left or not, this is one to check out.

Wednesday: Martyrs

...a good French movie.

There are films that are released that are all blood and gore for no reason. Movie writers and directors put it into shocking the audience and rely on that. This method seems to have worked, but it's rare to find one that has the gore, story and characters.

Lucie is kidnapped and alone for months as a child. She finally escapes, but is permanently scarred. Ten years pass and is now out for revenge on the people who have traumatized her. Throughout the movie, not only are the cops guessing, but so is the audience. It's not explained how Lucie escaped and what happened that disturbed her so badly. The characters are written well. So is the dialogue. As the movie continues, the story evolves into something much bigger. It's unexpected and goes somewhere most movies have never even thought of going.

The two lead actresses are wonderful. It's believable that the two would be best friends. Their connection is realistic and understandable. They both say their lines with a great flow. This is consistent throughout the movie. For unknown actresses, these two are very strong.

Martyrs captures darkness, grit and lonliness. It's a movie that makes the audience feel trapped and alone. This feeling gives the viewers chills. The gore effects are great throughout. Everything from shot wounds to being cut with a razor looks real. This will make audiences either look away or be disturbed but can't turn away.

In the long run, Martyrs is a good movie. The biggest complaint is that the movie does slow down. The last twenty minutes of the film may bore a lot of people. This is a French film with English subtitles. The subtitles don't distract from the film or the visuals. There is a warning that must be given. This movie isn't for the faint of heart. It is deeply disturbing on physical and emotional levels. If you can take all that, then Martyrs is a must see.

...a little long, but otherwise a beautiful movie.

It can be very tough for screenwriters and directors when making a drama. They have to make intense films into a short or medium amount of time. Some movies are too long, some are too short. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a victim of being too long. Although, every down has its up.

This flick is about a special baby. His name is Benjamin Button. He is left on the steps of a retirement home. This infant is born as an old man. As he becomes "older", he gets younger. This is the life of Benjamin. The story is brilliant. The pacing is a bit slow, but there's always something happening. It's interesting to see this man's life so thoroughly and in such great detail.

Brad Pitt is Benjamin. He plays his part very well. Despite the character's differences from normal society, it's easy to relate. Each actor portrays his or her role perfectly. The whole cast is impressive. Each character gets close with the audience. Every character is important and the audience can't help but feel for him or her.

It's rare to see CGI used in a drama. This can be a cool, unless if it's done incorrectly. Luckily, this movie uses it correctly. The graphics and designs used on Pitt as a teenager are excellent. It truly looks like him when he is older. The camera angles and photography are stunning. It's majestic and creative.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a beautiful movie. The only thing that brings this film down is its length. It's nearly three hours. Every second of this movie is important for the ending. Viewers should be quite curious to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
