Similar, but not as good as [REC}...

Once again, the United States can't come up with something original and has to steal from another film maker. The idea is good, but America is running out of ideas for horror. Quarantine is still a decent movie, but would of preferred to see the film makers come up with something by themselves.

The story is exactly the same as it's original, [REC]. The only thing that is different are some scenes that they attempt to explain stuff that was never explained in the original. I liked the mystery and not knowing what was happening or anything about the creatures. There is still a little bit of mystery, but would be nice to keep the same amount as [REC]. Unlike [REC], almost every actor in Quarantine is recognizable. Jennifer Carpenter (The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Dexter) and Jay Hernandez (Hostel Hotel: Part II, and Nothing Like the Holidays). This list could go on for a while. Jennifer Carpenter gives a good performance for the news reporter, but not quite as good as Manuela did for the original. Jay Hernandez gives a great performance as the main fireman. He shows the fear of the film and what any normal guy would do. This list of actors was put together well.

It is not surprising that Quarantine has stunning visuals. A lot of stunts are done and everything looks more realistic than in [REC]. There is much more blood used in this remake, with the same situations. When somebody was hurt or bitten, the director made sure you could see it.

Overall, Quarantine is not nearly as good as the original, but still passes as a remake. It is not a great film, but what makes it good is how entertaining it is. The film itself moves at a faster pace than [REC] did. Quarantine is recommended as a rental and if you like it enough, then buy it. I recommend that you see [REC] before seeing Quarantine. Wednesday: Aliens In the Attic

...doesn't have anything on Gremlins, but is perfect for children.

When I heard of Aliens In The Attic, I thought of Gremlins and The Goonies. I never liked The Goonies, but Gremlins is quite the classic. This film doesn't have anything on Gremlins, but is OK for children.

As I stated above, this is a lot like a mix of Gremlins and The Goonies. The stories are similar. Siblings and their cousins go to a vacation house and aliens come from the attic claiming they are going to invade the earth. Of course, the parents won't believe them, so the kids are alone to save the planet. It is a simple premise that never really held my attention.

I only saw decent acting from Robert Hoffman and Ashley Tisdale. They showed some human-like characteristics that I could see someone acting like in real life. These two characters were the least shown as well, which is very disappointing. The cousins and the brother were all very boring to watch and to listen to. I'm sure that this movie could of held my attention much more if Hoffman and Tisdale were shown more on screen.

I expected visuals to be top notch in a film such as this. I stand corrected, the CGI is awful. The aliens look fake and the mouths don't even fully match with the voices. Explosions and thunder bolts go off in the film, but not even one special effect looked realistic. I am always surprised to see bad effects in modern movies. Overall, Aliens In the Attic is disappointing for adults and teenagers, but great for kids. I chuckled only once or twice throughout, and of course those were parts with Ashley Tisdale and Robert Hoffman. The film tries too hard to be funny that it comes off cheesy and ridiculous. I would not recommend this one on the big screen, but as a rental it will to keep the children entertained for a little while.

Next movie: District 9

Friday: District 9

District 9 is one of the best movies of the summer.

Peter Jackson has not been named on the big screen in quite a while. District 9 is his first movie since the remake of King Kong. This movie comes across as a horror film, but it is more of a science fiction action flick. A few action films have been released recently, but this one is certainly the best.

The story is an interesting take on aliens. The premise is, what if aliens come to earth and they are kept in what seems to be a concentration camp? The worst of the people holding them soon starts to become one. Now his team is after him and he has nowhere to go other than District 9. It is a unique idea and involves the audience a lot.

Acting is needed for a film like this, because they are working with a lot of CGI. The main actor, Sharloto Copley, gives a great performance as the man turning into an alien. He showed the terror, fear and how far a man would go to get to his wife and see her again. District 9 does not have oscar worthy acting, but it does work great for a film such as this.

It would be hard to match visuals for movies such as Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen but they did make them just as good, if not better. The aliens look very realistic, just as real as the humans. There is a lot of blood in this film, and if you do not like blood in movies stay away. But, the blood goes by quick and does not come close to matching movies like SAW and Hostel.

Overall, District 9 is one of the best movies of the summer. I'm very happy that I was able to see it on opening weekend. It is more than just entertainment, it has deeper meanings and a lot of references to the Holocaust. This is the action movie of the summer and is highly recommended for all older teenagers and adults.
