Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005)

...a serious take on Norbit...

I've been a little bit nice lately, right? Well, unfortunately (or it could be fortunately) you will have to read another half-way positive review. Diary reflects the seriousness of betrayal while mixing in some cheap laughs involving Tyler Perry dressed as an old woman. You don't hear me complaining though!

Shortly after the intro, you find yourself in the shoes of Helen, a happily (or so she thinks) married woman who has everything. This all comes crumbling down when her husband of eighteen years leaves her for his mistress. Now that she is broke and homeless, Helen must turn to the only relative that will take her in, "her" grandmother Madea.

You may not think that this would be considered a comedy, but I assure you it is. From Madea's violent mood swings to the elderly getting high, I found myself laughing even when others weren't. There is a bit of drama, and (a lot of) romance that makes the periods that you can rest your sides enjoyable. Most people will be able to find at least one thing that they enjoy about this film. If you want a serious take on Norbit, then watch this film. If you wish to see a ridiculously large woman with no moral teachings in between jokes, then I suggest you watch Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

Shark Tale (2004)

...boring...

If any of you missed my bad scores this should help your cravings a little. Don't get me wrong. I don't give bad reviews because I just feel like it. They are actually bad movies. Unfortunately, for Dreamworks anyway, Shark Tale just happens to fit into that category of films.

In this undersea (where else would sharks be?) animated comedy, Don Lino (Robert De Niro), a mob shark, is looking to expand his "business". When Don receives news that one of his sons had been killed he becomes infuriated. Matters only become worse when arrogant Oscar (Will Smith) takes credit for the murder. Oscar is hailed hero, but trouble begins to arise between the sharks and himself.

Shark Tale tried to float on the incredible success Finding Nemo (which came out only a year earlier) earned. There is a major difference though. Pixar worked around four years to make Nemo. Sure, this film includes some BIG names in Hollywood. They are colorful enough, but why should I care. The plot is boring and I can't imagine anyone would dream of buying this. If you have kids and have rented ever child-friendly movie available then I would give you the green light for this one. Think about the children!

Guest Reviewer --- Cagney

Cagney is fourteen years old. She enjoys listening to music, hanging out with friends, and talking on the phone. She loves to travel and occasionally goes camping in the forests of West Virginia. Cagney is strong willed and isn't afraid to tell you what she thinks. Both Cagney and Jackson live in the same area of West Virginia.

All You Got (2006)

...leave it on the shelf...

MTV presented us with a movie full of R&B stars including: Ciara, Adrienne Bailon, Frankie J, Lil' Rob, and Play-n-Skillz. To our dismay, they excluded nearly everything else. Most of the movie was predictable, but there were a few scenes that rose above the rest. All You've Got illustrates the story of two crosstown volleyball squads (The Madonnas and The Phantoms) who are rivals off and on the court. Becca's (Ciara) school tragically burns down and forces her team to move into a "ghetto" school. Both teams learn that they must work together to win the championship, and each others' trust.

This movie follows in the footsteps of Bring it On with its intense drama, but at points it feels like the director was relying on star power alone. I don't think Benjamin Tabah even believed in them. After all , it did go straight to DVD. If you enjoy sports, or some of the "teeny" movies, then you may want to give it a shot. If not, leave it on the shelf and keep walking. It isn't the best, but it could be worse (*cough* Gridiron Gang).
