Happy Feet (2006)

...enjoyed by the entire family.

Happy Feet is one of those cute, adorable movies that makes you smile, even if you aren't a fan of singing or dancing. This film really surprised me. It brought to life a concept that sounds ridiculous on paper, but works almost flawlessly on screen. Another shocker was the superb animation. CGI movies are looking better and better and Happy Feet is not an exception.

The story begins with the birth of a penguin who can't stop moving his feet. He is deemed "unnatural" and is ousted by the leader of their flock(?). In their part of Antarctica, you are nobody unless you can sing. Mumble(Elijah Wood) sets out to find a solution to the fish shortage, gain acceptance, and make his parents(Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman) proud. Gloria, Mumble's dream mate, appears throughout the movie. Unfortunately, the romance ends up being a little clichéd.

At times the movie is difficult to follow. It almost feels like you are jumping between scenes. The cast is amazing and everything sounds natural. If you are having trouble finding a child-friendly movie then look no further. Happy Feet will be enjoyed by the entire family.

My Rating = Three and one half stars

Night at the Museum (2006)

...few parts [that] will make you laugh out loud.

I avoided this movie as much as I could, but my little brother persuaded me to rent it. Truthfully, I am glad he did. This movie is enjoyable on all levels and it's a fun ride. Ben Stiller is one of my favorite actors. Most critics disagree, yet I still believe he is genuinely funny.

Stiller plays Larry, the new night guard at a museum. There is one thing he doesn't know though. A tablet, brought from Egypt magically brings everything in the museum to life after sundown. The three guards before Larry failed to mention that in the interview. The T-Rex plays an insane game of fetch, the Roman army and western pioneers are at war, the African jungle animals are loose(including the devious monkey), and Larry is left with nothing but a sheet of instructions. Confused(and terrified) Stiller turns to the wax statue of Theodore Roosevelt. Soon, thieves take the tablet and Stiller is left with the responsibility of retrieving it before the sun rises.

This film has very few parts that will actually make you laugh out loud. However, it is never dull and you won't find yourself looking at the clock. Dick Van Dyke, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, and many other stars appear in this movie. There is something for everyone. Although, it is arguable whether it is worth buying, there is no doubt it my mind that you should at least rent it.

My Rating = Three stars

Gridiron Gang (2006)

...feels like the never ending movie...

Prepare yourself for boredom. There is no crime that deserves the punishment that is Gridiron Gang. It feels like the never-ending movie which makes forty-minutes feel like three hours. To make a long story short(the movie did the opposite), a bunch of teenage thugs get pulled off of the streets and are taught football at a prison-like facility. The Rock and Xzibit were the poor souls chosen to play in this movie. I'm not sure any amount of money was worth what they had to go through.

The only thing that I found remotely interesting were the back stories of all of the criminals. That kept alert for about the first thirty minutes(Disney based-on a true story translation-five hours and fifty-two minutes).

My advice if you happen to stumble across a copy of this movie:

  1. Burn it
  2. Run far, far away
  3. Write a letter to Disney and tell them to stop making the same inspirational movies over, and over again
I personally like the last one. We've all seen this crap before, and I really never want to see it again. Even if you like football I doubt you'll get enjoyment out of this.

My Rating = One half star
