An Inconvenient Truth (2006)

...an eye-opener...

An Inconvenient Truth has been an eye opener for many people including myself. This Academy Award Winning documentary has finally made the world see that it needs to change. I certainly have. Using less water and only turning the light on when I really have to may not save the world, but it sure makes me feel better.

This film presents statistics on a program similar to Power Point. It isn't too fancy, but it works. Woven in between the presentation are clips of his life, which frankly, are quite boring. Most of the film is informative and has meaning though, but I do have a problem with his solution. He believes that turning down that thermostat a few degrees or using a certain type of light bulb will solve everything. After seeing his electric bill ($3000+), I think someone needs to tell him to practice what you preach.

The issues with this film aren't serious. At times it can be a bit hypocritical, and I could have done without seeing parts of his life (that no one really cares about). Now that I think about it, he should have released a separate DVD… Al Gore: the Movie. Alas, these are forgivable and there is always fast-forward.

My Rating = Two and a Half stars

High Tension (2005)

...the scariest film I've ever seen...

As the scariest film I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot), I had to do a review on this one before long. Most of you have likely overlooked this one, but if you can get a hold of it, I would recommend this French-slasher over any of the classics.

Two college friends decide to take a break away from the city to study for upcoming tests. Marie and Alex visit Alex's parents in the countryside. The peace is not kept long as a psychopath ties up Alex, and kills her parents. Marie manages to escape. As the movie goes along, Marie follows the killer trying to save her friend while evading death.

Two words: watch closely. The movie's infamous ending can be figured out if you put all of the pieces of the puzzle together. This movie will give you chills. If you are a fan of gore then I suggest you rent/buy the unrated version, as the "R" rated movie has some of those scenes cut out. Either one you watch will satisfy all that are viewing. My only real complaint is that they did a half job with the dubbing. It is only partially dubbed. I could have gone without the sex scene, but it wouldn't be a horror movie without it.

My Rating = Four and a Half stars

Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa (2006)

...twists and turns everywhere...

Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: COS is an epilogue, of sorts, to the wildly popular fifty-two episode series of the same name (minus the COS part). Before watching this movie I advise that you watch a few episodes of the show or just look up a summary of the series. It just won't make sense otherwise.

Edward (Ed) and Alphonse (Al) Elric are the two protagonists of the film. Set two years after the series' last episode, Ed is dragged from his world into 1923 Munich, Germany. This alternate world features many things that seem very familiar to Ed. For one, he studies rocketry with Alfons Heiderich, who resembles his brother left behind in the other world. Shortly after the opening credits, he saves a Gypsy woman which leads to events that open up a path back to his home world. He not only finds joy, but also a conspiracy that threatens both entities.

As far as anime (short for animation) goes, you can't get a more complex storyline than this. There are twists and turns everywhere and the voice-acting is top notch. It can be confusing (even for those of us that have seen the series), but it can be overlooked.

My Rating = Three Stars
