Blades of Glory (2007)

...jokes were good enough...

Blades of Glory

Will Ferrell and John Heder (Napoleon Dynamite, anyone?) star in this wacky pro-skating film. After getting into a high-profile fight at a championship event, Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) receive a lifetime ban from the sport. The two rivals soon find a loophole and enter the competition under the category of team skating. After much fighting (mostly over trivial things), they work out a routine for the upcoming competition in Montreal.

It was really nice to see Heder performing in a movie other than Napoleon Dynamite . Both actors' performances were well done. Most of the jokes were good enough to make you laugh, but there were a few that fell flat. I liked this movie better than Napoleon Dynamite and Talladega Nights combined.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

...keeps you laughing...

Andy Sitzer (Steve Carell) works as an employee at a local electronics store. His fellow workers soon find out about his crush and the fact that he is still a virgin at the age of forty (hence the name…). They soon begin pestering him to convince his now girlfriend, Trish (Catherine Keener), to sleep with him. This proves to be difficult as they are in a strict no-sex relationship.

One of the best comedies I have ever viewed, The 40-Year-Old Virgin does what every comedy should, keep you laughing throughout the entire film. Most of the comedy is derived from the Andy's innocence. His buddies play a large role in the funny parts of the film as they are usually the ones that convince him to do stupid things(getting body hair waxed, etc.).

Your movie collection is truly incomplete without this wonderful comedy. If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you see it in the near future.

The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

...will mesmerize you...

Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera has been in various forms of media since the early 1900s. It has been interpreted from a book, to a play, opera, and movie. They have all been critically acclaimed except for the latest effort to bring a classic to the "big screen".

The movie is a story of romance and mystery. Christine Daae (Emmy Rossum) has suddenly been promoted from dancer to lead performer in an upcoming opera due to Carlotta's (Minnie Driver), the diva, illness. It is opening night, and the theater is packed. Ms. Daae blows the crowd away with a breathtaking performance. Unknown to everyone, Christine has been taking lessons from who she believes in the Angel of Music. This "Angel" becomes obsessed with her and kidnaps her, so he can take her as his bride. Raoul (Patrick Wilson) tries to step in and save his childhood friend (and current crush).

The Phantom of the Opera has it all (or almost). Beautiful sets, costumes, and singing will mesmerize you as you watch this film. Scenes of the crazy love triangle in Paris are well directed. Andrew Lloyd Webber had his share of input in this movie, so it is fairly faithful to the opera. People who don't normally enjoy musicals will most likely enjoy this film. Even though it isn't an Oscar winner, give it a try.

My Rating = Two and a Half Stars
