Proof of Purchase
by
Robin Macgregor Lane
We never signed a warranty, or gave a guarantee,
‘Cos people don’t buy love with an insurance policy;
But you keep your little picture, now that I am gone away,
Tucked in casually between receipts, but never thrown away.
Like the money through your fingers, like the credit-cards and change,
I was just a fluctuation in your shares and your exchange.
And you made a little profit, and you made a little gain,
Just before the trusts and bonds decreased and you were broke again.
And I see when you are saving, and where all your interests lie,
And I take a note of every thing you ever want to buy;
And I see that bit of paper with his number on the back -
Just another small transaction or investment in the pack.
‘Cos you’ve got your proof of purchase, got my photo in your purse,
Sitting silently between receipts for you to kiss or curse.
