The Web Poetry Corner - Ro Gunetilleke - A Sisyphus Story
A Sisyphus Story
by
Ro Gunetilleke
"Sad is the man who is asked for a story
and can’t come up with one"
- from a poem by Li-Young Lee
I won’t fold it
like a leaf of parchment,
crisp creased,
licked and enveloped.
I won’t roll it
like an ancient scroll,
entwined,
waxed and sealed.
I will crumpleit
like an un-erasable thought
ripped
from a spiraled spine.
Crumple, until the words collapse
in each other’s arms,
crumple, until the scars on my palm
imprint the melding pulp,
then, I will toss it
over the edge,
and watch it
roll and roll.
