Song To Keep Going
by
Philip Claude Andermann
Democracy committed suicide from the window ledge,
She had tried to break free of the cagelike hypocrisy of Independence Day,
in a country of broken law and ugliness and greed,
especially in her area of the city walls of dying dreams.
She was a Cinderella whom he sought to encourage
that she/they could make it home through the night
though there was still only one headlight.
But she kept running running "on one headlight,"
he tried to keep her running,
but in the end there was nothig left.
She did reach home,
but it was so as to end her life.
He came to feel just like her,
in the city walls of dying dreams,
and the death of his only friend was killing him of a broken heart.
Yet he would keep driving,
though especially now he had only one headlight left,
through his song.
