To Map Infinity
Philip Claude Andermann
New York "C" trains subway map
Hurtling on its own electric lines:
Looping self-implosion. A char-painted car
Imploding on his senses.
He longed to caress with charcoal
Flushed, tired faces - each partial map.
Wrinkles, connected all, rooted
In a hundred soils,
Refining themselves with more, burst forth branches
In his pencilled stokes
Refining to twigs, now colored
To explode green flames
Into another's asteroidal battlefield,
To reveal what no civilization's storm could shear or sunder,
Kind-man, that vast tree
Rushing the uncharted clouds.
