On Lake Time

On lake time
You eat when you’re hungry
Sleep when you’re tired.
The rhythm of the day is laid back
And nobody gets wired.
On lake time
The birds are up at first light
Rattling the leftovers on the deck
From the meal the night before.
Making a bigger mess of your clean up
They’re always looking for more.
On lake time
The days always run together.
Their numbers cease to matter.
Life is run more by the weather
Gasoline, ice, and worms.
Or if you’re out of pancake batter.
On lake time
You can lose yourself
In the beauty of the trees.
The wildlife the birds and rabbits
All the little things not everybody sees.
Including your bad habits.
On lake time
The worst thing to run out of is the day
And the time you have to leave.
It’s all been so good almost heavenly
It’s hard to believe you can’t stay.
That’s the time you hope it’s raining
It makes it easier for you to go.
To return to your life you left behind
To return to your routines your daily grind and go home.
And the last thing on your mind is
All the beauty and the good times.
Of all those days and nights
On lake time.
