Night's Embrace
by
Peggy L. Lanning
In the deep purple mist,
the night rises to touch the earth.
In it, childen will be conceived,
men and women depart. Wild life will
hunt to feed, all sustaining balance
of life on earth.
Children will complain and cajole, and sneak
a moment more of awakness before surrending
to the urges of parents who know best. These parents
counting the seconds before peace is restored to the
house, and they can catch moments to rekindle
their love.
The lonely, will stare into the
darkness one last time--watching.
No one comes, and so they
settle into whatever emptiness they
have created to pass the time.
Sleep pulls us deeper into the purple
mist, a swirling fog, clinging
heavily to us as we succumb to
gentle nothingness where dreams caress
us in the night’s embrace
