The Web Poetry Corner - Mango Tree - My Older Brother Finally Listened

My Older Brother Finally Listened

by

Mango Tree

My older brother called me today,
it's my birthday, a long overdue call
it took fifty-five years,
though, he may not have done it on his own
my younger brother put him up to it,
he, nonetheless, pushed the digits
we spoke of our lives, our deceased father
who up to a year ago was our rock
mother, with Alzheimer's came up
she is withering day by day
and, I spoke to him about me
about my treatment to starve off death
I spoke honestly about how severe the side effects are
how isolated I have been, how I have almost stopped
the treatment, but, my courage pushed me on
for the first time of our lives he acted as an older brother
he listened to me, he empathized,
as the tears fell like a rushing waterfall off of my gentle face
decades of relief occurred today, decades
all of this will help me to survive the next five and one half
months of treatment still to come.
