Innocent Child

Childhood, wondrous years
carefree days when everything was why?
the moment was the focus
and the abuse that a child often received
spun itself into a trance for the uncovering
which occurred in later years
a child loves fun and friends
they are more important than abuse, the terror
that occurs at night, or in some hidden enclosure
perpetrators find their moments, like those before them
this cycle of mistreatment, trauma, horror
harshly travels through the days until adulthood is reached
as the years pass, unhealthy relationships occur
substance abuse, work addicts, shame, acting out
until finally, one day, if one is fortunate, it rises
from the unconscious state to the conscious
and the courageous work begins,
it is worth the effort, it is worth the effort.
