Dream No Longer, America Has Lost Its Way

Once there was an America that I believed in
born in the Midwest of farmers, depression era virtues
it was instilled in me to work hard, and to dream
Martin Luther King Jr. had a magnificent dream
but, a bullet vaporized his dreams,
today was his birthday, he would have been 75 years old
I remember an America that was less selfish than today
one that cared more about the disenfranchised, the poor,
the uneducated, the have nots, those confused and still naive
that country no longer exists,
in 2004 it is more in debt, more selfish, and, above all
more poorly led since the nation was created in 1776
spineless congressional leaders spew empty rhetoric
fear has displaced hope, greed, compassion
and, the interior walls are crumbling
filled with dry rot and termites, swindlers, oil barons
and the belief that everyone can earn a decent living has crumbled
into the dust that remains of the walls, the original values that
made this country stand out above the rest
there are no new beliefs for the less fortunate
America has become a policeman for huge oil interests
it has no interest in human rights, civil liberties,
above all, it has no interests in striving to build a better, saner,
more compassionate, less violent world, none.
