Why is it writers write?

by

M A Heathcote

Why is it writers write? William Blake wrote!
He became inspired by; heavenly, visitations
Of angels: William Wordsworth wrote!
Because of his deep abiding love for nature.
And the countryside; William Shakespeare
Wished for fame and earthly fortune!
Retiring whilst still in earnest a young man
Having both achieved both fame and fortune.
W. B. Yates all so wrote for fame and fortune
But he was driven by his unrequited love.
For Maud Gonne; desiring to be Irelands
Greatest ever romantic poet!

In ascents the hearts of all these great writers
Was a desire to make something dead sparkle!
To make each dull individual noun breathe!
Each verb tremble life as if from a shadow.
Climbing blindly into flowering, conscience
Into evergreen conscious corrugated minds.
Thorough insight of a personal, struggle!
Through the vestiges brought about in words
Of love and soul! For the greater glory
The clarity of a farinaceous lineal art
Softening with a holiness to impart!
This is why these poets write.
And lesser mortals try...
{Try as they might!}
