Shadows of my dark desires

M A Heathcote

Shadows of my dark desires
Always linger like a gallows bird
Like an evening’s milk herd,
Returning from their quiet shires!

Deeply churning they are heard
In a hellish barnyard of choirs
Mournfully lolling... hectored
Into their own stalled quagmires.

To these gibbets are they chained?
And manacled all the unholy night
Before him the shepherd, arraigned?
They’re left hanging only a dendrite.

Only a salt crystal earth-rained
Only a creature held in vigil light.
Only a monster darkly sustained
Under a cautionary, yellow light.
