The Web Poetry Corner - M A Heathcote - If we but smash the atom!

If we but smash the atom!

by

M A Heathcote

Paper burns as does the body
Word and breath a carbon copy
In oils--allí there burns another
If we but smash the atom!
Might not we codex endless power
Cut the living stratums of a tree,
See? It bleeds black rubber ebony.
Then to might not we find, a father
In a mother, our mother in a father,
Mercy; our sister in a warring-brother
Burning as a lover
With the upkeep of forever:
Then might not we also believe
In a bankrupt, believer
His insolvent gold wings, deaths deliverer.
