The Web Poetry Corner - M A Heathcote - The pearl white stairs

The pearl white stairs

by

M A Heathcote

My foot was thrust in a doorway
Between heaven and hell.
Like a jay-clothe salesmen,
With tacky goods to sell.
The devil said boy come with me"
Your gold will burn, like fire
And set you free?
But god whispered sweetly in my ear"
And said; son this would be
The palace of your fear
So leave these common wares"
There’s more beauty than in jewels
Along these pearl white stairs.
