The Web Poetry Corner - M A Heathcote - Put a compress on my heart

Put a compress on my heart

by

M A Heathcote

Put a compress on my heart
And nurse me back to health
In your arms, in your arms!

And before and after
We heal one another,
Just remember the tears
The pain and the laugher
We shared in them years
As a father and a mother
To our one! And only son!

Who would burn his fingers?
On kitchen matches
And loose his life to a gun!
A neighbourhood, hoodlum,
A teenage, drinker,
A mercilous drug baron!

Oh, put a compress on my heart
As I feel his wounds still bleeding
His palm still openly, feeling,
For my hand, for my healing,
As he did as child in fear of the dark,
Reaching for my hand,
Reaching on those reins, again to stand:

Oh, put a compress on my heart
And nurse me back to health,
In your arms, in your arms!
