Candle wax sky II

M A Heathcote

Pellucid blue-eyes, whoever told you to-be-wise
whoever told you, you could dream, beyond those?
Monolithic, moonlit, midnight skies
to drink the midnight curtain of sleep
into waking hours
where dreams sublimely creep
like a carnivorous green flower
like a sun-spider sunning on a rock
like a worm in the pippin of an eye
looking down from a candle wax sky
whoever said? It would be easy to dream?
Whoever said?
That those darker blankets of velvet-red
wouldn’t eventually cover
your miserable maudlin flower-
Stem head with the blooded-thorns of a rose bed.
