The Web Poetry Corner - Luigi Lalumia - Jolted

Jolted

by

Luigi Lalumia

Half crying - Half barking
The coyotes shook me out of my slumber
Nothing could have been more jolting
It compared to a clap of thunder
I rose out of bed as fast as I could
My eyes could not focus as quickly as they should
My ears and the coyotes led me to the windows

The barking and crying triggered an image in my head
Not so many months ago i found my cat dead
Autumn was mauled - bitten into
Committed in the heat of battle
It was the act of a blood thirsty animal

>From that very spot the gruesome incident occured
The growling and scuffeling could be heard

As this scene replayed through my mind
I thought of the other one's the dead one left behind
Were they alright?
I stumbled as I made it to the windows
My fingers fumbled the edge of the stubborn shade
My breath was held
There was a pounding in my throat

I exhaled as they ran aimlessly into the night
Without purpose -
Without fright
The sound of the snapping and howling ran on down the road

I stared out the window
Into the pumpkin colored light
My left hand was resting on the wall
So was my nose
