Homeless Heaven
by
Luigi Lalumia
I wrote this after I heard the news...
Wandering the streets of Ft. Worth
Maybe he was starving, drunk or on drugs
Whatever the case
He was lost and without love
At close to 40 years old
He settled down in garbage
To get out of the wind
I wonder what he was thinking
When he closed his eyes that last time
Were there dreams of the family he once had
Of someplace called home he left behind
Maybe demons were making him mad
Or were there visions of all of us
ignoring his kind
I pray he didn't realize
His fingers and toes are
numb bones now
Grinding together like 20 cold stones
As he took his final breath
Was his head heavy with heavenly thoughts
What is heaven to a homeless brother
Food and wine on every corner
Another chance to start over
Or simply to be held by his mother
The police found him with out I.D.
He could not be claimed
So he will be burned or buried by the city
As a homeless man with no name
One thing is certain
Wherever his life began
It has ended freezing to death
In a garbage bin
He is homeless no more
God has him now
Every morning he can draw open
the curtain to a beautiful new day
And he is never lost again-
Because God's light shines on his face
