the whales song

I lay
cold in a boat
wrapped in an overcoat
listening to the tired ocean
flowing.

and then
i heard a whale
hearing a song so calm
it seemed absurd to feel alarm
I thought

I sat
noticing that
it sang gods much loved hymn
as if it spoke directly to him
calmly
