My Childhood Memories
by
Kenneth R. Bays
I remember many years ago when I was but a lad,
The house that we lived, it makes me very sad.
We had no running water, no furnace to keep us warm,
And I was really frightened whenever we had a storm.
For anyone to live this way it is so very wrong,
But my dad's love for alcohol proved way too strong.
My mother did the best she could, she made our house a home,
By loving us and working her fingers to the bone.
Other peoples laundry sometimes she would do,
So she'd have extra money to buy her kids some food.
As time went by things got better, actually very good,
But I still have nightmares of carrying coal and chopping wood.
So I thank my mother for all that she has done,
I just wish I could've been a better, loving son.
