One of Britain's Best (93)

SIR HENRY WALFORD DAVIES
British Composer of Music
Born Shropshire 1869
Died Bristol 1941
Studied at the Royal College
Knighted in 1922.

Long have I wished to write a precis
on the work of this great Composer;
at the moment - from the background
I can hear his Solumn Melody, a short
piece of music for organ and strings,
played in church at the funeral of
the Late Queen Mother...A gentleman
of religious music Sir Walford Davies
composed songs, anthems, chamber music;
the Contata (everyman) and the RAF
March Past ~ popular to this day.

Through his radio talks to Britons, he
encouraged more interest in Classics.
On Edward Elgar's death, Sir Henry was
appointed Master of the King's Music.
We will remember him as a great and
talented composer. We need that organ
music to play at each dark National
occasion. Sadly he died in 1941.
His body is buried in the grounds
of Bristol Cathedral...

"It takes all kinds of music"
