"Gilbert & Sullivan"
Sir William Schwenk Gilbert
Born England 1836
Died England 1911.
Arthur Sullivan
Born London 1842
Died England 1900.
Geniuses in partnership, brought together
by Producer Richard D'Oyly Carte, hence
the building of the Savoy Theatre London.
Sullivan composed the music, Gilbert
composed humorous lyrics. Famous for light
operas and more serious operas, oratorios,
songs and orchestral works. The lives of
two great men of music cannot be written
in detail by myself, but having always
been a lover of the classical, I own many
records and play records. Today I am
enjoying Gilbert & Sullivan highlights,
a record titled "Music for Pleasure".
I give just a few of the highlights.
The Gondoliers, The Micado, Iolanthe,
Pirates of Penzance, and HMS Pinafore,
and I list but a few of the songs.
Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes
A Wandering Minstrel I
Entrance and March of Peers
Poor Wandering One
When maiden Loves she sits and sighs
For I'm called little Buttercup.
And another favourite written by
Sullivan, The Lost Chord, a wonderful
piece of music and words.
Arthur Sullivan died in England and
is buried at St. Paul's Cathedral.
William Schwenk Gilbert died in
England. His grave at Great Stanmore
London. Their music will stay with
us all forever.
