EDWARD WILLIAM ELGAR
Great British Romantic Composer
Master of the King's Musick.
Born eighteen fifty-seven, Worcester.
Died nineteen thirty-four, Worcester.
Buried at Little Malvern Church,
statues of the great man may be seen
at Worcester, Malvern and Hereford.
Edward Elgar was Catholic from birth.
His father owned a music shop, which
encouraged Edward's great interest
in music....he would say "The world is
full of music, it is everywhere - all
around us". From an early age, he became
composer of delightful orchestral works,
symphonies-oratorios-contatas-concertos,
music for organ, violin and piano.
Music made him a happy man. He married
his Caroline; they moved to London,
hence the short and sweet "Salut d'amour".
But they returned to Great Malvern, where
he shone as a Great Composer.
Continuing with Choral Music, he composed
Enigma Variations, still played at the
Cenotaph in London on Remembrance Day...
Oh those massed bands! The Pomp and
Circumstance March is also played until
this day - Last Night of the Proms...oh
the glory!
Sir Edward Elgar visited America and
received Honorary Degrees from two
Universities - Yale and Pennsylvania,
and was honoured from six British
Universities. In 1933 he became
Sir Edward Elgar Bt.OM.GCVO.
His extensive musical score can be
found from other internet sources,
and his music is absolutely beautiful.
How fortunate are we - he bequeathed
the great Music of a lifetime for
our enjoyment. How can we thank him?
"Music for strings
and every heart sings,
so let us bow down to
his sweet Serenade".
Elgar the great with
his music so quaint
was Master of all he
surveyed."
