Great Civil Engineer
JOHN RENNIE
Born in Edinburgh 1761
Died in London 1821
Buried at Westminster Abbey.
Early in childhood, John Rennie
was showing genius and interest
in boats and machinery, and at
twelve years of age, worked for
the great inventor Andrew Meikle;
John started his own small
business at eighteen, and also
attended Further Education
classes at Edinburgh Ubiversity.
Civil Engineering skills began
on Canals, and as time went by,
his reputation was flowing - as
was Norfolk Drainage system in
1810...Ah, but bridges were his
priority; this is where the
civil engineering loomed;
examples ~ Lune Aqueduct,
Waterloo, Southwark, and Kelso
5-arched bridge over the Tweed,
and of course London Bridge,
completed by Sir John Rennie,
his son. Later, this bridge
was shipped overseas to
Arizona's Lake Havasu City -
where it is admired by many
interested tourists.The bridge
is set close to delightful
scenery.
John Rennie's subsequent projects
were on docks and harbours -
Sheerness, Plymouth, Grimsby,
Leith and London. He was a
"unique" civil engineer - builder
of beautiful bridges. And is there
anything more delightful to set
the scene?
