Series of famous British names:
ENID BLYTON
Gifted Writer of poems
and Children's Fiction.
Born in London - Enid (Mary)Blyton
eighteen ninety-seven;
Died in Hampstead Nursing Home
nineteen sixty-eight.
During her teaching days, the
skill of writing was discovered,
and in World War Two, Enid Blyton
was the most popular writer of
children's stories, her first
book of verse being "A Child
Whispers" 1922. We all recall
The Famous Five - television
series, The Secret Seven, Noddy
Goes to Toyland and her book
of Fairies. At this very moment
I have at the side of me, my own
copy of "First Term at Malory
Towers", and in this book, the
titles of some of her six hundred
stories are listed, viz:
Malory Towers Series
St.Clare's Series
The Mystery series.
Way back in the eighties, sixty
million copies had been sold, in
various languages. I would very
much like to know the up-dated
figure. Her books were obviously
extremely popular.
Enid Blyton married an Editor,
Hugh Pollock, and they lived at
Beaconsfield, with two daughters.
But the marriage ended, and later
she married Surgeon Kenneth Darrell
Waters, and changed her daughters'
names from Pollock to Waters.
Apparently, the marriage was a
happy one, but sadly Kenneth died
in 1967; Enid herself took ill and
died in 1968.
This is a very short version of
the life of Enid Blyton - but
enough to remind us of a great
lady of past times...one we admire
greatly, and one we thank sincerely.
