Saint Patrick
by
Joyce Hemsley
St. Patrick
Became Patron Saint of Ireland.
Born - 389 in Britain
Died - 461, believed to be
in Downpatrick. The Chapel
of St. Patrick is still part
of Glastonbury Abbey, England.
At sixteen, he was sold into
slavery ~ taken to Antrim and
stayed for six years, during
which time he was in close
liaison with his God. He then
returned to Britain, studied
for twelve years to become a
missionary. Returning to
Ireland, it is said of him,
he was Bishop and Founder of
Armagh, and he had a strong
christian influence,
particularly in Ireland.
His "Confesso" and "Epistola"
remain until this day.
St. Patrick was seventy-two
when he died, on the seventeenth
day of March, hence the custom
of St. Paddy's Day. America,
more so than Britain, celebrate
this day, having done so since
the year seventeen thirty-seven.
And with everything Irish, good
luck abounds. Belief in God is
renewed; green is the theme,
with food, drink, music and
happiness.
389 to 461 is a period, too long
ago to retrieve absolute accurate
information, but we will always
honour the name of St. Patrick,
reminding us of the Shamrock, and
the tale that there are no snakes
in Ireland.
