JOSEPH PRIESTLEY
not to be confused with J.B. Priestley.
I will write on J.B. later.
JOSEPH PRIESTLEY
English Scientist and Educationalist.
Discovered oxygen and many other
gases - first reliable anaesthetic,
ammonia, and hydrogen chloride.
Also carbonated drinks...Joseph was
acknowledged as the greatest
chemist worldwide.
Born in seventeen thirty-three
in Fieldhead, Leeds, Yorkshire.
Died eighteen-O-four in America
where he spent his last ten years.
Educated locally and during a
three year illness was self taught.
He attended Daventry Academy - and
at age twenty-two, he showed great
intellect and talent. His first
appointment was Minister of
Religion. His work in the field
of education was outstanding.
He made a vast improvement to the
world of education and lectured on
world history, English, and every
possible subject including Monarchy
and Parliament. He worked widely
on the introduction of the Sunday
School in Britain. Fine work!
He improved the Curriculum - grammar,
literature and poetry, languages,
history, music, maths, psychology -
all the modern subjects taught in
our schools today. Everything he
introduced was correct to the very
detail. Such a great man!
In 1764 Joseph was awarded a Degree,
Doctor of Law, from the University
of Edinburgh, for his works on
history. The details of hs works
can be seen on the Google Search,
and I warn you there are many! Far
too much detail to be written here.
He spent ten years teaching in
Birmingham and was in touch with
Prime Minister Pitt (the younger).
Soon though, his books and letters
were destroyed in riots, eventually
leading to a move to America with
his wife and sons. He spent his
last ten years in the States,
meeting George Washington, and in
turn John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
Joseph Priestley's work conctinued
until his death...and after,
benefitting the world of education
in a BIG way.
A very unique talented Yorkshireman;
and the knowledge of his greatness
is growing daily. We are blessed!
