The Web Poetry Corner - Joyce Hemsley - Horatio Nelson

Horatio Nelson

by

Joyce Hemsley

Series of famous British names:

English Admiral
HORATIO NELSON
First Viscount.
Born in Norfolk, seventeen fifty-eight,
Died, eighteen-0-five, after being
fatally wounded in Battle of Trafalgar,
in the autumn of the year.

Horatio Nelson joined the Navy at the
age of twelve; became Captain at the
age of twenty. Until 1800 he was on
active service in the Mediterranean,
capturing Corsica. He lost sight in
the right eye in the Battle of Calvi
and he lost his right arm in the
Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in
1797. Whilst in Naples, the year after,
he fell in love with Emma ~ Lady
Hamilton; they had a child out of
wedlock ~ Horatia, who was born four
years prior to Nelson's death.

I have written a short poem on Nelson
which I have pleasure in quoting with
this dedication:

"England expects every man
will do his duty."

He who goes down to the sea in ships,
One was Lord Horatio Nelson...
Admiral famous, officer bold.
loved by Lady Hamilton
but feared madly by the foe.
This was Viscount Horatio Nelson.
Wounded in Battle, he died graciously
with those famous last words
"Kiss Me Hardy."

His unique restored ship HMS Victory,
can be seen where it sleeps
near the shores of the Deep in
Hampshire's Old Portsmouth Harbour...

The Body of Horatio Nelson is
buried in St. Paul's Cathedral,
London, and God rest his soul.
