Ivor Novello (Davies)
by
Joyce Hemsley
Series of famous British names:
IVOR NOVELLO (DAVIES)
British Actor, Song-writer, Manager.
Born in Cardiff, eighteen ninety-three.
Died suddenly in his London flat,
nineteen fifty-one. Ivor's mother
was Clara Novello (Davies), popular
singer of the time.
He wrote many memorable songs,
songs we all recall. He was the
author of straight plays, and his
romantic musicals will be loved
forever. He starred in his musicals.
O yes, how we remember them;
how we adore them:
Glamorous Nights, The Dancing Years,
Perchance to Dream, King's Rhapsody.
The last to be written in nineteen
fifty-one, was Gay's The Word.
I pay tribute to Ivor Novello with my
own little poem "Perchance to Dream."
"Beautiful words of Ivor Novello
still live in my heart today;
remembering his name as writer of
songs, and author of musical plays.
This talented young Englishman,
with romance in his soul, lived
through the dancing years, and
perchance I will dream on a
glamorous night, waking to smile
through my tears.
