Series of famous British names:
CICELY MARY BARKER
Famous poet and artist of the
complete Book of the Flower Fairies.
She was born at Croydon, London
eighteen ninety-five.
Died in Worthing Hospital
nineteen seventy-three.
Cicely Mary Barker was taught at
home by a governess, owing to
ill-heath. She was a natural
painter and artist, sometimes
using oils and pastels; sometimes
water colours and pen and ink.
Descriptions of the flowers and
plants were in rhyming poetry -
accurate and uniquely beautiful.
Illustrations were also beautful.
On a personal note: I was given
the Book of the Flower Fairies
when I was just five years old,
by a kind and considerate uncle
of mine. Many an evening, I would
be filled with delight, resting
and reading Cicely Mary's poetry.
I dressed as the Poppy Fairy, and
my little life revolved around the
Flower Fairies. The book was lost
recently, but I now own a brand
new copy - on my shelf. The book
is at my side at this moment.
Here is the poem
"Song of The Poppy Fairy"
by Cicely Mary Barker:
The green wheat's a-growing
The lark sings on high;
In scarlet silk a-glowing
Here stand I.
The wheat's turning yellow
Ripening for sheaves;
I hear the little fellow
who scares the bird-thieves,
Now the harvest's ended
The Wheat-field is bare,
But still red and splendid,
I am there.
THANKS to the one and only
the Late Cicely Mary Barker.
