Series of famous British names:
The Great Artist
THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH
born seventeen twenty-seven
died seventeen eighty-eight.
Birthplace was Sepulchre Street
Sudbury, Suffolk. The street is
now named after him, and his
house has become a Museum,
showing many of his great art
treasures.
Thomas Gainsborough went to
London at age fourteen and
studied the art of etching at
the Academy...but he was,
of course, self-taught.
In seventeen seventy-four,
he painted many graceful
portraits of The Royals, although
he, himself, preferred realistic
landscape paintings.
Favourite portraits are of
George III and Dr. Johnson,
and a portrait of his own two
daughters chasing a butterfly.
Beautiful! Also a portrait of
his wife, so natutal. All
exhibited in London.
THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH was the
great Master and his valuable
paintings live on.
