Series of famous British names:
CECIL JOHN RHODES
Founder of Rhodesia,
born in Hertfordshire
eighteen fifty three
died nineteen-o-two.
Son of a Vicar -
travelled to Natal
when he was eighteen,
became an empire-builder,
making a huge fortune in
South Africa...diamonds
and gold. At age twenty
eight, he joined the
Cape Legislature. Soon
became Prime Minister.
He was thirty nine and
he resigned after six
years in office.
CECIL RHODES advocated:
"equal rights for every
civilized man south of
the Zambezi"...these were
only words as he died
shortly after making the
statement.
His heart was always with
Britain, and at Oxford
University - under his
will - were founded the
Rhodes Scholarships for
American, German and
Commonwealth students.
Another Great Briton,
who gave his name and
much of his life to South
Africa.
The Vicarage where
Rhodes was born is now
a Museum of his lifetime
achievements.
