The Web Poetry Corner - Joyce Hemsley - Sir Sacheverell, Dame Edith Sitwell and Sir Osbert
Sir Sacheverell, Dame Edith Sitwell and Sir Osbert
by
Joyce Hemsley
Series of famous British names:
THE THREE SITWELLS OF WOODEND
Highly gifted and talented
literary family of the last century.
Sir Osbert born in London
Sir Sacheverell born in Scarborough
DAME EDITH SITWELL
also born in Scarborough.
They were poets of distinction
in their own right. And famous
critics and authors.
Many books were published,
selected and collected -
A Place of One's Own
Tales my Father Taught Me
Sacred and Profane Love
Life of Alexander Pope -
to name but a few, written
from nineteen forty-two.
"Woodend" Scarborough was the
Yorkshire House of the Sitwells
and now the history museum
is responsible for the house.
This story proves that poetical
talent is a gift that shows
itself in the family line.
And to this family, we bow our
heads as we drink the wine.
