Jowett and Rolls - Royce
by
Joyce Hemsley
Series of famous British names:
"ROLLS-ROYCE"
SIR FREDERICK HENRY ROYCE
born eighteen sixty-three
died nineteen thirty-three.
CHARLES STEWART ROLLS
born eighteen seventy-seven
died nineteen-ten.
Royce manufactured electric
cranes and dynamos - and built
an impressive car, for himself.
He joined up with CHARLES STEWART
ROLLS, Rolls-Royce Partnership.
Sir Frederick Royce designed the
Phantom II Continental, silent
and refined! Then he produced
the R Type engine, which later was
named The Merlin Engine, and used in
spitfires and hurricanes, fighter
planes of the second world war.
BENJAMINE and WILLIAM JOWETT
founders of Jowett Cars Limited,
eighteen ninety-four to
nineteen-sixty. Remember The Javelin
and the Jupiter Sports? Although
these cars ceased to be in the
mid fifties, because of financial
difficulties, some Jowetts are now
displayed in the Industrial Museum.
Four honoured names within the
ratings, modest mechanics who rose
to fame, and invented great things
for which we are thankful. Every
invention leads us onward to
greater happenings.
