Andrew Carnegie

Series of famous British names:
ANDREW CARNEGIE
born in Dunfermline
eighteen thirty-five.
Andrew lived in Britain until he was twelve,
born in a humble weaver's cottage. "a home of
modest poverty", as he himself named it.
The family emigrated to Pittsburgh, where
Andrew Carnegie became rich man of the day.
From his Carnegie Steel company, he made a
tremendous fortune ~ giving his wealth to England,
Canada and the United States, for construction of
Public Libraries...three thousand buildings in all.
I hope they are still standing today. Much later,
Andrew visited Britain for six months of every year.
He wrote many books, well worth reading! Soon, he
took over Skibo Castle, Sutherland, Scotland,
converting it into a tourist attraction.
"A giver of millions" ~ a philanthropist, helping
those less fortunate than himself. I quote one
of his sayings: "A man who dies rich, dies disgraced."
The little weaver's cottage, place of his birth,
was bought as a gift on his sixtieth birthday.
His wife Louise bought it. And a memorial house
was attached to enhance its interest.
Much more I could write about Mr. Carnegie...
Americans will recall that Carnegie Hall was
named after Andrew, who contributed to its structure.
I hold his portrait ~ white hair and beard, white
shirt, black bow tie and dark suit. He appears as
a seventy-five year old gentleman.
This industrialist of wealth died aged eighty-four
and his good work carried on beyond his death.
He left a princely sum in the coffers.
