English Orchestral Conductor
and Impresario SIR THOMAS BEECHAM
born eighteen seventy-nine,
son of a wealthy Liverpool
Pill Manufacturer (Beechams),
died in nineteen sixty-one.
Sir Thomas was educated at
"Oxford", he received a Knighthood
and became second Bt, succeeding
his father. An autobiography was
published "A Mingled Chime" 1944.
He was founder and Conductor of
the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
and brought an air of new life
and excitement into British classical
music, also introducing Russian
Ballet into England. Renowned for
his love of opera, and interest in
Mozart, Haydn, Delius, Sibelius
and Strauss.
A favourite Sir Thomas quote:
"Brass bands are all very well
in their place - outdoors and
several miles away."
Sir Thomas Beecham was three times
married...a very gifted musician
of the Twentieth Century. He brought
much joy and happiness to people
across the world, for which we
honour him and thank him.
