DAVID LLOYD GEORGE
First Earl, Dwyfor
British Liberal Statesman
and Prime Minister...held
office from nineteen sixteen
to nineteen twenty-two.
He valued the Church, gained
training as an orator. In his
early political career, he
was Chancellor - determined
to "lift the shadow of the
workhouse from the homes of
the poor." Hence, his people's
budget and National Insurance
Act. It was said of him,
although he was a liberal,
he was nigh on a socialist.
Lloyd George stayed on to face
the first world war, fully in
charge of the war effort, and in
nineteen sixteen, he succeeded
Asquith as Prime Minister, and
agreed an All Party War Cabinet.
He was a family man, lived thro'
the second world war, and his
younger daughter, the late Lady
Megan continued in his footsteps.
Labour Party 1955. Lloyd George
was married to first wife, Dame
Margaret and then second wife,
Countess Frances. He was raised to
the Peerage in nineteen forty-five,
two weeks prior to the end of
the war and the date of his death.
On my shelf I own a copy of Morgan's
Family Letters and I quote just one
of hundreds, written in the first
world war: "In battle we hold our own,
but we are not out of it yet. I am
getting America at last to do something
and hope to God it is not too late." LG
Such a great man of the Twentieth
Century, and we honour his name.
