The Web Poetry Corner - Joyce Hemsley - Edward Lear

Edward Lear

by

Joyce Hemsley

EDWARD LEAR
British Artist and Humorist
introduced the nonsense
Limerick into England in
eighteen twenty, and this
five line verse became
very popular. I quote one
of Edward Lear's followed by
one verse of my own...

There was a young lady of Tiga
Who rode with a smile on a tiger
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside
And the smile on the face of the tiger.
(by Edward Lear)

There was a young lady from Hull
Who thought she was queen of them all
But to her surprise
Not one of the guys
Asked her to dance at the Ball.
(by Joyce Hemsley)
