Yellow Velvet

When the early morning sun
gleams fresh across the plain,
a velvet field of rape seed shines -
a yellow counterpane!

No fairer sight on land or sea
than the coloured hills in May,
a glorious fantastic spread,
to take the breath away.

Great poets of the distant past
their prose and rhymes would write
if they had seen the rape fields gold
turn into jewels of light.

Tomorrow, as you travel free,
just take a glimpse and you will see
a velvet cloak spread o'er the lea,
as it shows off nature's finery.
