Laughing Jackass

Joyce Hemsley

Away from the water he can be seen,
living on insects and reptiles lean;
'tis the Kookaburra, on yonder bough -
the "Jackass" with the human sound.

Of all the kingfishers in the sky,
he is the one with the teasing cry.
His laughter is heard, loud as can be
way "down-under" in the kookaburra tree.
