The Web Poetry Corner - Joyce Hemsley - Humble Flower

Humble Flower

by

Joyce Hemsley

We write of daffodils in Spring,
and skylarks soaring on the wing,
but the little daisy seems to be
a nondescript nonentity.

This humble flower, pure as snow,
is nature's queen from long ago;
waking at dawn she greets the light,
and with the sunset says 'goodnight'.

Forty white petals, trim and neat
surround a golden centre sweet;
she reigns amid the grasses green,
the daintiest flower ever seen.

Yet trampled on by you and I,
ignored and abused by passers by, she
suffers in silence but ne'ertheless
forgives us for our thoughtlessness.

Buttercups and daisies is the theme
resounding across the flowing stream,
and daisy-chains the children wear;
'Tis a humble flower, I do declare!
