The Web Poetry Corner - Joyce Hemsley - Bird of the Sky

Bird of the Sky

by

Joyce Hemsley

They kissed at the gate
Said goodbye in much haste.
He was off to the war
And might see her no more.
She feared in her heart
"Hell" would soon start...
When the Blenheim he flew
Was shot down from the blue.

A telegram came :
"Killed in action today, but
His life was not given in vain."
With her soul in despair,
She knew then and there
Sun had given way to the rain.

Now red roses bloom where they
Once said goodbye;
She would always remember
Her "bird of the sky".
