Animal Disease

Can't write about spring in two thousand and one.
Can't write about green fields at the rise of the sun.
Can't tell of the birth of demure little lambs.
Can't stop and just gaze at cows, goats or rams.
Can't tell of the shepherd's most heart-rending thought,
his grief and his sadness at the sudden onslaught.
But soon, very soon, we can write of the glory
of the hills and the dales, and all nature's story.
Once again we will pen our thanks and our pride -
we live in dear England, and our love we can't hide.
